Extract from a roadtrip (i)

After Gundy, the earth begins to turn red and the sides of the highway are speckled with scraps of cotton that fall from the mighty bales hauled by road trains.

Eagles drifting overhead cast long shadows across the bitumen. The kangaroos beside the road are melodramatic in death: paws over hearts, heads flung back.
