the real gateway drugs

From coffee runs a slippery slope to
Sunday breakfast, leaning into lunch; to
10am pauses and to narrow-minded cafes where
all chairs stubbornly face the sea.

From coffee comes the terrible plight of
getting things done
of thoughtfully worded emails and of
late-night analyses.

Coffee leads to early mornings in airports and the pursuit
of perfection. Coffee irresistibly invites exploration
and experimentation.

And tea?
Tea brings company, it cannot
be extricated from good books and better conversations, from
old friends and welcome strangers, from rainy days
and sunny mornings.

Tea goes hand in hand with extra scones and
furtive biscuit-dunking. Tea
begets story-telling.
